Each night as the embers fade I strain my ears to hear ANY noise. The silence is only pierced by the ethereal haunting call of loons. Theirs is the quintessential sound of the Canadian wilderness. (listen here). We all have memories triggered by specific scents or sounds. For me, the calls of these amazing birds defines time spent beside, in and on the lake. Their calls travel further on a still lake at night and sometimes you can even hear a response from a neighbouring lake. Simple pleasures surrounded by nature serves to restore on all levels.
